Giuseppe Gilera founded Italian motorcycle manufacturer Gilera in 1909 in Arcore. Piaggio acquired the company in 1969 and is the fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world with six marques. Headquartered in Pontedera, Italy, It started off by obtaining rights to the Rondine four-cylinder engine which became the basis of Gilera's racing vehicles for nearly 40 years. In addition to motorcycles, Piaggio still also manufacture small-displacement motorcycles and scooters under the Gilera name.
