Based in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, the royal palace; Hampton Court Palace has not been inhabited by the British Royal Family since the 18th century. Originally built around 1514 for a favourite of King Henry VIII; Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the palace was passed to the King in 1529 as Wolsey fell from favour and the King decided to enlarge it. The palace is now open to the public and known as a main tourist attraction under the care of the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces.
