Kawasaki Motorcycles, mostly known as Kawasaki, started manufacturing motorcycles when Kawasaki Aircraft acquired Meguro Manufacturing Co. Ltd. After the acquisition they went on to form Kawasaki Motor Sales in 1962. During that time, they were attempting to have their engineers develop a four-stroke engine for small cars and this project ended in 1962, when some of the engineers were then moved to work on developing the motorcycles technology. The company started exporting in 1968.
